Hegemony Blog Eric Magrum

shaq-and-kobe.jpg The
definition of hegemony is: the ability of dominant groups in society to exercise control over weaker groups not by means of force or domination, but by gaining their consent, so that the unequal distribution of power appears to be both legitimate and natural. This picture of Kobe and Shaq is an example of hegemeny because Kobe the lesser dominant player of the two had to submit to the more powerful presence of Shaq. Kobe didn't like this much but gave his consent for the better of the team. So Shaq gained dominating power over the team which was natural and legitimate

Even before the word hegemony was derived many examples are present. George Washington being the first president of the United States is an example of hegemony. He was a unanimously chosen to take the position. This goes back to the definition of hegemony. The definition says that consent is given, and not gained by force, to the person or persons in charge. This is exactly what happened with George and the unanimous decision to make him the first president of the United States of America.

Player Allen Iverson and Coach Larry Brown did not get along with each other. Iverson wanted control of "his" team and Brown knew it was "his own" team and he needed control. Iverson and Brown faught for many seasons, finally Iverson submitted his consent to Brown for overall team control. This helped the team reach the NBA Finals. This is an example of hegemony because Iverson consented to giving the power to Brown for the better of the team.
